Girls, Glamour, Giggles at the Whitstable Social Club

Your host Jo Phaure

Whitstable is having a comedy moment

With the launch of the newly re-branded Whitstable Social Club (formerly the Whitstable Labour Club), re-opened by local publishing phenomenon Julie Wassmer on April 5th, attention turns to what’s changed at the historic venue.

The focus is on local comedienne Jo Phaure’s regular comedy nights under the brand Girls, Glamour, Giggles. The latest date is 11 April under the banner ‘April Fools’ and features two other comedy talents with Whitstable links.

Genieve Pepper

Genieve Pepper is another St Mary’s RC alumni, along with Jo Phaure. One doesn’t like to wonder if a school run by nuns might have contributed to the two local girl’s desire to perform dirty jokes for a paying audience!

Joined by David Roberts who’s life has come full circle as he performed at the original Labour Club 35 years ago!

Joined by top quality act Leslie Gold, as seen at the Comedy Store in London, and Lucy Pook. Both featured solo shows at the highly popular Faversham Fringe in 2024.

Tickets are selling fast as the regular nights (future dates 13 June, 10 October and 12 December) build a reputation for a fun, friendly night out supporting local comedy and with the added advantage of very reasonable priced drinks at the Whitstable Social Club.

But that’s not all. Jo is being really bold and ambitious and is also planning an even bigger comedy night in Whitstable on 13 September 2025 at the Umbrella Centre in Whitstable with some big name acts already confirmed:

Sarah Mills who’s Bad Bod Squad show is a current hit on BBC Radio 4.

Kate McLeod

Kate McLeod whose hilarious Karismaa character saw her featured in the recent BBC New Comedian Regional Heat Finalist.

Ramsgate based Clint Stevenson is a comedy magician. It’s way better than it sounds. You’ll laugh and be blown away!

All ably hosted by our two former RC St Mary’s girls! More acts to be announced in coming months but get your early bird tickets before 1 May for just £8:

Whistable is host to even more comedic talent. Ruth Stone is a multi-talented comedy performer, they perform as both themselves, Ruth Stone, and Hot Rod an hilarious drag king persona which went down an absolute storm at the last Girls & Giggles event as well as at the Faversham Fringe. Katie Rose-Petley, a Canadian comic who learned her craft in Amsterdam and has now relocated to Whitstable, as well as David Roberts a founder member of No Name Nomads improve, turning his hand to Stand Up in Whitstable and further afield. Whitstable is having a really fresh, funny and pleasingly diverse comedic moment. Not bad for a town which Katie Rose-Petley pointed out, in her hilarious Faversham Fringe Show, is over 98% white!

Jo is also hosting and promoting a semi-pro show in Minster in Sheppey on 17th April at The Thamsha Lounge (a glamorous, of course, Shisha and Cocktail lounge).
